Mining Colorectal Polyp Images for Colon Examination based on Texture Description and Decision Tree Induction

چکیده
Medical disease examination is often based on images. Mining these images in order to obtain the classification knowledge for automatic image classification is a challenging task. This task belongs to the field of image mining. Image mining is usually not only comprised of mining a table of numbers it has also to do with transforming the image in the right image description. Both, the image description and the classification knowledge, determine the quality of the classifier. Texture is a powerful method to describe the appearance of different biological objects in images. There are different texture descriptors around. Which one is the best for medical images is still an open question. The most used texture descriptor is the well-known Haralick ́s texture descriptor. We propose a texture descriptor based on random sets. This descriptor gives us more freedom in describing different textures. In this paper we develop two classification models based on decision tree induction, one for each of the two texture descriptors. We compare the two texture descriptors based on a medical data set. We review the theory of the two texture descriptors and describe the procedure for the comparison of the two methods. A medical data set is used that is derived from colon examination. Decision tree induction is used to learn a classifier model. Cross-validation is used to calculate the error rate. The comparison of the two texture descriptors is based on the error rate, the properties of the two best classification models, the runtime for the feature calculation, the selected features, and the semantic meaning of the texture descriptors. Big Data, Decision Tree Induction, and Image Analysis for the Discovery of Decision Rules for Colon Examination
Abstract— The aim of our research was to develop a method that allows us automatically to discover the decision rules for diagnosing medical images in normal tissue images and images showing a polyp. We used a data set of images that came from an endoscope video system used for colon examination. The data set contains 283 normal tissue images and 61 polyp images. The 283 normal images consist o...
متن کاملMalignant Colorectal Polyps; Pathological Consideration (A review)
Background: Routine screening colonoscopy is on the rise and pathologists have to deal with the ever larger numbers of excised colonic polyps. It is very important to optimize the patients’ individual treatment and further surveillance. Pathologists play a critical role in management, as most of the clinical decisions concerning colonic polyp managemen...
متن کاملSpectral and Statistical Features in Fuzzy Neural Expert Machine for Colorectal Adenomas and Adenocarcinoma Classification
This paper presents a novel method which automatically detects differences in biopsy images of the colorectal polyps, extracts the required histopathology information through Fourier and statistical images analysis of the microscopic images and then classifies the cells into normal adenomas and malignant adenocarcinoma. The images are captured by a CCD camera from a laboratory microscope slide ...
متن کاملAutomatic Colorectal Polyp Detection in Colonoscopy Video Frames
Colonoscopy is currently the best technique available for the detection of colon cancer or colorectal polyps or other precursor lesions. Computer aided detection (CAD) is based on very complex pattern recognition. Local binary patterns (LBPs) are strong illumination invariant texture primitives. Histograms of binary patterns computed across regions are used to describe textures. Every pixel is ...
متن کاملDemonstration of Herpes Simplex Virus, Cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr Virus in Colorectal Cancer
Background: The present study sought to investigate molecular evidence for association between the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in CRC and colorectal polyp by using the PCR method in Iran. Methods: In this analytical case-control study, we selected 15 patients with CRC, 20 patients with colorectal polyp, and 35 patients without mali...
